What is Fiber Optic Performance Enhancement Coating?

Fiber Optic Performance Enhancing Coatings (FOPEC) are coatings made of special materials that are used to protect the core of optical fibers and improve transmission performance.

The coatings are made of special polymers or composites with high strength, corrosion resistance, and resistance to environmental interference, and can effectively improve the mechanical strength, durability, and ability to work in extreme environments.

Its main role includes: reduce signal transmission loss, protect the fiber from mechanical damage, enhance bending resistance, improve resistance to moisture penetration and chemical corrosion, and so on. As optical fibers are widely used in communication, medical, industrial sensing and other fields, the research and development and application of optical fiber performance enhancement coating has a broad prospect.

Industry Chain Analysis of Fiber Optic Performance Enhancement Coating

The industry chain of fiber optic performance enhancement coating can be divided into three links: upstream raw material supply, midstream coating production and technology research and development, and downstream fiber optic manufacturing and practical application.

Upstream link: raw material supply

The upstream area involves suppliers of polymer materials, specialty chemicals and nano enhancement materials. The performance of these raw materials directly determines the functional performance of the coating. Currently, major raw material manufacturers in the industry include 3M, BASF, Dow Chemical, etc., which have technological advantages in providing high-temperature-resistant and UV-resistant specialty polymers. Meanwhile, the introduction of some advanced nanomaterials, such as silica nanoparticles and graphene coating-modified materials, offers unlimited possibilities in this field.

Midstream link: coating production and R&D

Midstream is the most technically advanced link in the industry chain. The formulation design, process optimization and development of new materials for coatings require substantial R&D investment. At present, leading international coating enterprises such as AkzoNobel and Kansai Coatings of Japan, as well as some private enterprises rising in China, such as Huayi Group and Sankeshu, have gradually strengthened their layout in the field of fiber optic coatings.

Downstream segment: fiber optic manufacturing and application

Downstream manufacturers combine performance-enhancing coatings with the actual production process of optical fibers. Through high-speed coating equipment, the coating is uniformly covered on the surface of the optical fiber and cured by UV light. Currently, the world's leading fiber optic manufacturing companies, including Corning Incorporated, Changfei Fiber Optic Cable Co., Ltd. and Fiberhome Communication Technology Co., Ltd. closely integrate the coating with the fiber optic pulling process to achieve mass production.

Global Optical Fiber Performance Enhancement Coating Industry Status

According to industry report data, the global fiber performance enhancement coating market was valued at USD 474 million in 2023 and is expected to reach USD 976 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 11.3% during the forecast period.

The European and North American markets are growing rapidly due to their strong technological research and development capabilities and high demand from the communications industry, while the Asia-Pacific region is the major powerhouse for market expansion.

The U.S. is a global leader in the research and development of fiber optic performance-enhancing coatings, and its fiber optic coating technology was earlier used in high-end industries such as defense and high-frequency communications.

According to the data released by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. invests more than $500 million annually in research and development in the field of fiber optic materials and coatings. Well-known companies such as Corning and DuPont continue to make efforts in the production of high-performance coatings, through the improvement of different polymer materials to achieve a lower refractive index, higher stability of light propagation.

China, as a large producer and user of optical fiber, currently accounts for more than 60% of the global demand for optical fiber and cable. Thanks to the in-depth promotion of the “new infrastructure” policy and the comprehensive coverage of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) projects, China's fiber optic coating technology is rapidly moving towards the international leading level. Changfei Optical Fiber and Hengtong Optoelectronics and other enterprises already have the ability to develop their own coating formulations, while constantly striving to develop high-performance coatings, in order to solve the problem of stable transmission of optical fiber in the complex geographic environment of the country.

Expert Opinion

Optical communications experts, Corning senior R & D engineer James Hamilton (James Hamilton) has said in a recent industry conference: “fiber optic coating breakthroughs not only need to improve the quality of raw materials, more dependent on the combination of coating process and design. From the current production trend, the direction of sustainable development has become an industry consensus, through innovation in the field of UV curing and fiber-optic enhancement materials, we expect to achieve the goal of reducing fiber optic transmission loss by 10% in the next five years.”

Li Jianhong, technical director of Changfei Fiber Optics, also mentioned in the interview, “The Chinese market is experiencing rapid growth in demand for coating applications in large data centers and 5G communication coverage. As a developer of independent intellectual property rights for fiber optic coatings, our goal is to achieve full coverage of high-temperature and low-temperature resistant coatings for applications in extreme climates.”

Experts in the field of fiber optic communications said at an industry seminar, “Future fiber optic networks will develop in the direction of higher bandwidth and lower loss, which puts forward higher requirements for the performance of fiber optic performance-enhancing coatings.  For example, bending resistance, temperature resistance, and aging resistance will all become key indicators.”  This is in line with the conclusions of many academic papers, for example, many papers published in Optics Letters and Optical Fiber Technology have focused on the research of new fiber optic coating materials.
