Process Mass Spectrometer Market Industry Chain Study

Sunday,08 Sep,2024
Process Mass Spectrometer (PMS) is a device used to monitor and analyze the mass and components of chemical processes in real-time. Its applications are focused on industries such as petrochemical, energy, environmental monitoring, food processing, and pharmaceuticals, and are characterized by high accuracy, fast response, and sustainable monitoring.

The equipment analyzes the mass spectra of gas or liquid samples by means of high vacuum systems and ionization technology, which can provide information about the components in the reaction process and provide key data for optimizing the production process.

The process mass spectrometer market is expected to grow to over USD 3 billion by 2024. The market demand for this equipment is rising steadily, which is closely related to the increase in the degree of industrial automation, the complexity of the process and the increasingly strict national environmental standards.

Industry Chain Analysis

Upstream: The upstream of process mass spectrometer includes suppliers of core components, such as ion source, electromagnetic device and vacuum system and other high-precision equipment. The global high-precision components market is monopolized by a few companies in the U.S., Germany and Japan, typically represented by Shimadzu in Japan, Thermo Fisher Scientific in the U.S. and Bruker in Germany. These companies have technological leadership in the design and manufacture of components, and are often able to realize innovations.

Midstream: The midstream segment consists mainly of the assembly and production of process mass spectrometers. Key players in the global market include AMETEK, Thermo Fisher Scientific, ABB, and MKS Instruments. With years of technology accumulation, they are continuously improving their market competitiveness in terms of equipment performance as well as customer customization needs. These companies have invested extensively in research and development with the aim of capturing more market share through the development of new features such as more sensitive detection and more stable long-term operation.

Downstream: The downstream applications of process mass spectrometers cover a wide range of industries. The petrochemical sector is the largest market for this equipment, with many of the world's largest refineries such as Shell, ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies relying on it to monitor key parameters in production in real time, thereby reducing energy consumption and increasing production. The demand for these devices is also growing year-on-year in the natural gas analysis, environmental monitoring, and pharmaceutical industries, especially in applications with stringent detection limits, such as real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Experts are generally of the opinion that technological advancements will drive further expansion of application scenarios for process mass spectrometers across multiple industries in 2024. The environmental sector is particularly promising with increased demand.

Professor Mark Williams of the University of Birmingham's School of Process Engineering said, “As Industry 4.0 advances further, the intelligence and integration of process mass spectrometers will be a key selling point for the next generation of products. Real-time high sensitivity monitoring capabilities not only enhance the efficiency of process control, but are also necessary to respond to global environmental regulatory requirements.”

Prof. Williams' views are shared by other industry experts. John Smith, Senior Research Fellow at the College of Chemistry, Iowa State University, also said, “The main challenges for the process mass spectrometer industry in 2024 will continue to come from the control of equipment costs and technical complexity. Further reductions in equipment investment costs and simplification of operations to make them more accessible to small and medium-sized businesses would greatly expand market reach.”
